Canva for Authors: DIY Kindle Book Covers

Learn how to create your own e-book covers and save moolah!

About This Course

When I published my first fiction book, I went all in--balls to the wall--on book cover design. I paid a whopping $400 for my book cover. Yep, I said it--FOUR HUNDRED FREAKING DOLLARS.

And before you even ask, let me tell you that that first fiction book of mine has yet to show me a return on investment or even break even!

And since I'm being candid here...the book cover design wasn't super great in my eyes. Yeah, it had some fancy Photoshop design elements to it. Yeah, it was fairly eye-catching.

But hell no it wasn't worth the $400 price tag.

What I paid for was the "Premium" price tag offered by a well known book designer (who shall remain nameless).

It was this very experience that pushed me to find alternative options for my book covers. After much searching, I did find one or two pre-made book cover designers that I loved, and who offered book covers at a fraction of the previous $400 price tag.

But even more importantly, I stumbled upon a free and easy to use graphic design program that allowed me the opportunity to easily create my own book covers in about 30 minutes or less in most cases.

How much money can you save creating your own book covers?

On average, I was spending $15-$20 for book cover design on Fiverr, and around $40 for premade covers from some third party vendors I work with. So how much have I saved?

Let's do the math:

I now have over 25 published books online.

I've created my own book covers for 80% (that's 20 books).

On the low end, 20 books x $15 each =

$300 in cover design savings

On the high end, 20 books x $40 each =

$800 in cover design savings

You could potentially earn back most of your investment in this course by the savings you gain from creating just one of your own book covers instead of outsourcing it. See the potential financial benefit here? That means less expenses towards the creation of your book and more profit!

Do you need experience in graphic design?

I've received some awesome compliments about my book covers. Most often, people want to know if I have experience in graphic design. The answer is NO.

Quite honestly, the only design software that I previously had any experience with was an archaic version of Adobe Illustrator with my previous employer. I literally knew just enough to log-in, make a few simplistic changes to text only (like for a poster or flyer), then save. If any more than this was needed, I high-tailed it to the one trained graphic designer we had on staff...because ain't nobody got time for that, right?

The thought of having to learn Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or any other graphic design software made me shutter in my boots.

Then, quite by accident, I was introduced to Canva and this non-techie gal became obsessed with using the tool for every single branding or graphic design project that came my way. So now, I can proudly say...

I'm not a Canva Guru, but I am a Super Engaged Canva Enthusiast who knows how to rock it with cover design!
